Movie Night at St. Thomas Public Library

Fri Sept 17th

The St. Thomas Public Library presents free movies, often before they hit DVD. A snack bar is available before the show, so don't forget your change. All proceeds to Library Revitalization.

Marmaduke
Marmaduke, the world's most lovable Great Dane, leaps from comic strip fame (appearing in 600 newspapers in over 20 countries) to big screen stardom in this family comedy event. A suburban family moves to a new neighborhood in Orange County, California with their large yet lovable Great Dane, who has a tendency to wreak havoc in his own oblivious way. But its not all living large for the Duke, who finds that fitting in with his new four-legged friends - and a potential romantic interest - isn't always easy for a super-sized teenage dog. Owen Wilson gives the beloved Great Dane his voice in the film, which also features the voices of Fergie, George Lopez, Emma Stone and Kiefer Sutherland.

Please Note: This film is rated G for whole family fun, but may not be suitable for very young viewers. Parental discretion is advised.

Time: 6pm
Tickets: Admission is FREE; donations to the Library Revitalization Fund are greatly appreciated
Venue: St. Thomas Public Library, Carnegie Room, Lower Level
Address: 153 Curtis Street, St. Thomas
Contact Phone: 519-631-6050
Email: rcrocker@st-thomas.library.on.ca
Website: www.st-thomas.library.on.ca

St. Thomas Terry Fox Run

Sun Sept 19th

When Terry recognized that he would not be able to complete his Marathon, he instead bequeathed his mission to those very Canadians who kept him going day in and day out. It was our turn to inspire Terry Fox.

And almost 30 years later, Canadians adopted Terry’s mission of finding a cure for all cancers with an enthusiasm and passion that has done him proud.

Sat Sept 18th to Sun Sept 26th

The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup is a Vancouver Aquarium conservation in action program that began in 1994 with a handful of Vancouver Aquarium employees who wanted to participate in the Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup. In 2009, nearly 57,000 Canadians registered to cleanup 1,568 sites across Canada. Over 160,900 kg of litter was removed from a cumulative distance of 2,500 km of shoreline, which is equivalent to the approximate driving distance from Vancouver to the Manitoba/Ontario border. Some of the more unusual items found in the past include a message in a bottle (the message said, "Please don't litter"), false teeth, a living room set, a canoe made out of duct tape, wedding dress, disco ball, a hotel safe, a toboggan, a mini trampoline and a clothesline complete with poles and pins.

Have a positive impact on your local environment by removing litter from shorelines along ponds, streams, rivers, lakes, or oceans in your community. Most shoreline litter originates from land and land-based activities, so by stepping up to ensure our litter doesn't reach Canada's waterways, we are all taking action to protect our environment.

Several events across Elgin County are already registered, from Port Glasgow to St. Thomas to Port Bruce. For more information on how to become a Site Coordinator or Cleanup Participant, please visit www.shorelinecleanup.ca or call 1-877-427-2422.

STEPAC Exhibition: Mapping Absence with Massengale, Levison-Nolan & Abe

Sat Sept 18th to Sun Oct 31st

Peggy Levison Nolan, Harumi Abe and Jordan Massengale will address domestic inhabitable space: nostalgic, magical, real, imaginary. The silence of space, the confines, the paranoia, is someone there? The practical space, is it a comfortable chair? It is an unmade bed? Is it lonely? Are you hiding in it? Is it fine…? Does it smell like garlic and curry or fake flowers? Is it tacky with nostalgia?

Venue: St. Thomas-Elgin Public Art Centre, Main/Wimbush Gallery
Address: 301 Talbot Street, St. Thomas
Contact Phone: 519-631-4040
Email: info@stepac.ca
Website: www.stepac.ca

STEPAC Exhibition: Clark McDougall’s “Out of Bounds”

Sat Sept 18th to Sun Oct 31st

The works displayed in this exhibition document paintings produced outside the limits of St. Thomas and his 5 mile perimeter. These scenes are those of the city. They describe what he liked about the city, the electrical energy he felt in it as far as the surroundings go, such as automobiles in the streets. They are a build up of his experiences, his materials, and his philosophy, which assisted him in achieving the impact of the city.

Venue: St. Thomas-Elgin Public Art Centre, Timken Gallery
Address: 301 Talbot Street, St. Thomas
Contact Phone: 519-631-4040
Email: info@stepac.ca
Website: www.stepac.ca

BBC Proms: Last Night of the Proms at Galaxy Cinema

Sat Sept 11th

The BBC Last Night of the Proms is one of the most famous music events in the world, listened to and watched by millions around the globe. On Saturday, September 11th, the powerful finale of the 2010 BBC Proms season will be broadcast LIVE via satellite from the Royal Albert Hall in London, to select movie theaters nationwide. Presented in Canada by Cineplex Entertainment and BY Experience, under exclusive license from BBC Worldwide.

While it lives up to its reputation of a fun Last Night party celebrating British tradition, it equally encapsulates the spirit of the Proms, with leading international artists and an all-embracing programme, introducing new works alongside much-loved classics and bringing together the different themes of the season.

This year, tradition meets high jinks as Jiří Bělohlávek conducts his second Last Night. Renée Fleming lends her lustrous soprano to music by Strauss, Dvořák and Smetana. Former BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist Maxim Rysanov gives Tchaikovsky’s popular cello variations a new voice, and loyal Prommers can spot the last traces of the season’s Wood, Parry, Wagner, Rodgers and Hammerstein and opera themes.

Time: 2:30pm
Tickets: Adult $19.95, Children & Seniors $17.95 (plus taxes)
Venue: Galaxy Cinema St. Thomas
Address: 417 Wellington Street, St. Thomas
Contact Phone: 519-631-2261
Website: www.cineplex.com

Hawk Cliff Weekends

Sat Sept 11th & Sun Sept 12th, Sat Sept 18th & Sun Sept 19th

As always, the first Hawk Cliff Weekend is perfectly timed for the main push of Broad-winged Hawks. Historically, the peak for this species has been a few days before or after Sep 17th and in past years they've had as many as 130,000 Broad-winged Hawks recorded in a SINGLE DAY!! (along with many other species too).

The second weekend is timed to catch the end of the main Broad-winged Hawk flights and with a little luck, the first of the Peregrine Falcons. Last season they counted 1000's of Kestrels and Sharpies during this timeframe. This is typically when there are the largest volumes of September migrants.

Bird showings and monarch butterfly tagging demonstrations held each day at 11am and 2pm.

Venue: Hawk Cliff
Website: www.ezlink.ca/~thebrowns/HawkCliff/index.htm
